Two killed in Bangladesh for allegedly writing “Joy Bangla” slogan on a wall
Two young men were brutally killed in the northern district of Chapainawabganj, Bangladesh, allegedly for writing the slogan “Joy Bangla” on a wall.
According to various media reports, Mohammad Masud Rana and Mohammad Raihan, who were known as leaders of the Chhatra League, wrote the 'Joy Bangla' slogan on the eve of Bangladesh’s Victory Day on December 16.
Subsequently, a group of people attacked them and hacked them to death in public. Four others were injured while trying to intervene.
Masud Rana was the president of the Chhatra League at Chapainawabganj Polytechnic Institute and also served as the assistant secretary of the organization's Nachol Upazila unit. Mohammad Raihan was a leader in Nachol Upazila.
The Awami League has alleged that members of Jamaat-e-Islami's student wing, Chhatra Shibir, along with activists from the BNP, were involved in the killings.
In early December, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh ruled that 'Joy Bangla' is not the national slogan. Consequently, authorities have begun removing the slogan from government offices and official documents.
The 'Joy Bangla' slogan served as the battle cry during Bangladesh's Liberation War and was famously used by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the end of his historic March 7 speech.
However, the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus has refused to recognize 'Joy Bangla' as the national slogan. They are currently seeking a court ruling to reverse the related High Court decision.
As a result, Awami League leaders and activists have been chanting the slogan even more fervently, despite facing consequences like the recent killings.
Earlier, the interim government led by Yunus had banned the Awami League's student organization, the Chhatra League. Nevertheless, the organization remains active and continues its activities despite government surveillance.
